This week, we had a webinar on neurodiversity, a fascinating subject. Some people are wired differently and thus think differently, and how can we create a safe work environment for neurodivergent and neurotypical people to work in?

Neurodiversity is a word to explain the unique way people’s brains work. It includes people with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, hypersensitivity, giftedness, and much more. Statistics say that around 15 to 20% of the population is neurodivergent. So, that means 1 in 5 people are not neurotypical.

These one in five people bring something extra to the table. Where neurotypical people are very stable in their (work) behavior, neurodivergents have spikes in their behavior. They are very good at certain traits, depending on their type of divergence, and they have downside spikes, which are definitely not their strengths.

For colleagues and companies to make the best use of the talents that neurodivergent colleagues bring, we should create a workspace where they thrive as they have different needs than neurotypical people. We need to learn more about what makes everybody tick and what makes them spike in the positive sense and focus less on continuing to improve the downside spikes.

The webinar by Saskia Schepers showed us that to have a diverse and thriving company, we need neurotypical and neurodivergent people, giving them room to excel and be the best they can be.

If you want to read more about this topic, we can advise you to read the book (in Dutch) “Als alle breinen Werken” by Saskia Schepers.
